Abstract

Aim. To create and validate a questionnaire in order to find out what contraceptive methods are preferred by women, what is the motivation of their decision, knowledge on contraception, and what are their opinions and beliefs towards hormone–based contraception methods. Methods. A 21-question research tool, was created and reviewed by a group of eight experts. Reliability testing included internal consistency and test–retest reliability by executing a test–retest pilot study (n=35). The reliability of the research instrument was determined by calculating its internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha.  Results. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the whole questionnaire varied between 0.743 and 0.980, All items met the requirements of internal consistency, excellent internal consistency was calculated (Chronbach’s alpha = 0.897). Reliability was calculated and rated as adequate. A weighted kappa was calculated and the result of 0.699 demonstrated test-retest reliability. Pearson correlation coefficient as well as Spearman correlation coefficient were 0.7 each. All corellations were statistically significant. Conclusions. The questionnaire assessing knowledge, usage and opinion about contraceptive methods among women is proved to be an effectively used in clinial practice and as a tool for scientific research.
