HORMONAL CONTRACEPTION IN OLDER REPRODUCTIVE AGE
Abstract
Summary. Women aged 40 years and older experience physiological changes that affect both general and reproductive health, and therefore require an individualized approach to contraception to prevent unintended pregnancy while ensuring contraceptive safety. Contraceptive choice for women in their 40s should be guided by individual health status, comorbidities, and risk factors for cardiovascular disease and venous thromboembolism. This article provides an up-to-date review of hormonal contraceptive options for women of older reproductive age, with particular consideration of their effectiveness, safety, non-contraceptive benefits, potential risks, adverse effects, contraindications, and use during the perimenopausal period.
