Abstract

The first international guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), prepared with the participation of experts from various specialties from 6 continents, covering medical, lifestyle, psychological, and social aspects, were published in 2018. Updated recommendations were published in August 2023. The main aspects of these guidelines are discussed in this review. Stronger evidences regarding risk for cardiovascular diseases, glucose intolerance, diabetes mellitus type 2, obstructive sleep apnea and endometrial cancer are provided. Need for more attention to patients’ psychological health is emphasized. Importance of life style interventions and quality of scientific evidences in relation to treatment efficacy are discussed. Information on new hirsutism treatment options and stronger evidences of the efficacy of anti-obesity agents as well as bariatric surgery is provided. Infertility associated with polycystic ovary syndrome treatment options are discussed. Further scientific research is needed in the field of polycystic ovary syndrome as majority of evidences provided in the guidelines are of low quality.
