Abstract

In the public discourse of Lithuania, there is an increasing emphasis on the significance of women’s psychological well-being during pregnancy. Both in Lithuania and abroad, scientific research into the needs of expectant mothers aims to contribute to the optimal physical and psychological well-being of expectant mothers, to encourage health-promoting behaviour during pregnancy, to learn about factors that determine well-being and related personality traits, and other things [2]. Women who subjectively rate their partner’s support during pregnancy as more supportive have been found to feel happier and less stressed [23]. In addition, a lower level of stress during pregnancy has positive implications for both mothers and infants [24]. Aim. Using a systematic review of the scientific literature, describe the importance of partner support for women’s psychological well-being during pregnancy. Methods. A systematic review of scientific literature was conducted, including the analysis of 32 scientific articles. Objectives: 1. Examine the significance of partner support for a woman’s psychological well-being during pregnancy; 2. To analyze the psychological support that women expect from their partners during pregnancy; 3. Determine the type of partner support associated with positive and negative changes in a woman’s psychological well-being during pregnancy. Results. Partner support can be beneficial not only for physical health but also for the emotional well-being of the couple. Women who received adequate support felt safer and had more time for relaxation, resulting in lower stress levels. Conclusions. Partner support directly affects the psychological health of women and the fetus during pregnancy. During pregnancy, women primarily expected support from the future father of their child in terms of participating in prenatal check-ups, preparing the home, and providing emotional support.
