REASONS FOR CHOOSING CESAREAN SECTION SURGERY. LITERATURE REVIEW
Abstract
A caesarean section is an operation to terminate a pregnancy by removing the fetus through the anterior abdominal wall and uterus. This operation is performed in cases of dangerous complications that endanger the lives of the mother and the fetus. However, some women want to choose to give birth this way, when there are no medical indications. Therefore, this article discusses the reasons why women choose to give birth by caesarean section when there are no medical indications for it. Purpose. Analysing scientific literature to examine and describe the reasons for women’s choice of caesarean section operation. Methods. A literature search was performed in the “PubMed” database. 33 articles were selected and analyzed. All reviewed publications are no older than 10 years. The article presents only a summarised review of the scientific literature. Conclusions. One of the most common reasons women choose to have a cesarean section is tocophobia, or the secondary fear of childbirth, caused by a previous traumatic birth experience. Another important reason is the fear of pelvic floor muscle injury. The decision is also influenced by the socio-cultural environment.
