Abstract

L-transposition of the great arteries is a rare congenital heart defect. In recent decades survival rates in patients with heart defects have increased and these women require help with their pregnancies. The risk of pregnancy with L-transposition of great arteries depends on the woman’s functional capacity, dysfunction of the systemic ventricle and the presence of arrhythmias. Pregnancy exacerbates the failure of systemic ventricle and women with ejection fraction below 40 % should be advised against pregnancy. The rate of perinatal complication in children of women with L-transposition of the great arteries is 2–3 times higher. However, as in the case described a successful pregnancy is possible. Patients with congenital heart disease should be encouraged to perform pre-conception counseling.
