PAIN RELIEF DURING INTRAUTERINE DEVICE INSERTION IN ADOLESCENT AND NULLIPAROUS WOMEN. LITERATURE REVIEW AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Abstract
WHO states that intrauterine devices are considered to be the best contraception option for adolescent and nulliparous women. Despite their proven value and accessibility, the fear of pain during the procedure stops women from choosing this method. Aim. To discuss possible pain relief methods during intrauterine device insertion in adolescent and nulliparous women. Methods. Based on the keywords in the PubMed, Cochrane Library database, 17 studies that met the criteria for inclusion were analysed. Conclusions. The most pain during intrauterine device insertion procedure feel adolescent and nulliparous women. Fear of pain is the most common factor contributing to low intrauterine device insertion rate. NSAIDs and weak opioids (tramadol) are not effective for pain relief in IUD insertion. Lidocaine – procaine gel and intracervical or paracervical lidocaine injections are considered to be effective methods for pain relief during procedure.
